Life Facts of Axolotl, a Unique Mexican Fish Walk

Axolotl, also known as the Mexican Walking Fish, is a neotenic salamander which is one of the most unique salamander species found on earth.

Like most amphibians, Axolotl breathes through their gills but is also able to breathe through their skin.

Axolotl laboratory specimens show a variety of skin colors from which four mutant colors survive – Albino (white / gold color with gold eyes), Leucistic (pale pink with black eyes), Axanthic (gray with black eyes), and Melanoid (gray black with olive tone).

This is a large and tall lake that stores an optimal temperature of 20 degrees Celsius.

In the wild, axolotl is a species that is very endangered due to the introduction of invasive species and habitat loss.

They are fully aquatic species that prefer freshwater lakes and ponds enriched with dense vegetation.

But the number of axolotls is increasing rapidly because these animals are popular as aquarium pets.

Axolotl can swallow gravel which functions as a gastrolith to improve digestion (grinding function) and also to regulate buoyancy control.

Anatomy Axolotl’s unique characteristic is its anatomy, exhibiting a phenomenon known as neoteny.

Axolotl is known to have four pigmentation genes that produce different color variants during mutations.

Axolotl external gills are coated with fine filaments, also known as fimbriae, which help increase the surface area for any type of gas exchange.

But these gills are also used to swallow air from the surface, a method known as buccal pumping, providing oxygen to their lungs.

Adult Axolotl has finned tails that are useful for swimming.

Axolotl also has the ability to regenerate limbs that have been detached or damaged.

Despite having a tadpole appearance, the unique characteristic of Axolotl is its ability to retain certain larval features such as the tadpole’s dorsal fins.

This hormone is a thyroid-stimulating hormone that produces thyroxine which helps change salamanders.

Spawning generally occurs during late winter when water temperatures and daytime levels are good.

The breeding process begins with the waltz, which is a dance of friendship between male and female Axolotl to start the marriage.
